A RARE Jaguar found in a garage

A RARE Jaguar found in a garage doubled its estimated value when it went under the hammer in Herefordshire.

In a packed saleroom in Leominster, all eyes were on the 1956 Jaguar XK140, which was the star attraction out of the 130 cars on sale.

Despite the fact the previous auction record for this model was £59,400, and it carrying a hefty estimate of £60,000 to £70,000, the car eventually sold for £121,000.

Brightwells’ classic car expert James Dennison said: “Many people told us we were being too brave on our estimate before the sale, but we knew we had something very special on our hands and were confident it would sell well. However, none of us were prepared for just how well it went and the final hammer price of £121,000 was nothing short of astonishing.”

Interest was so high due to the car’s excellent state of preservation.

It had been kept in the same family from 1958 until 2008 and had only covered 30,000 miles in all those years.

Correct in every detail, it had never been welded, repainted or restored in any significant way.”

Mr Dennison said: “People often argue over which is best, a fully restored car or a good original example, and I think this result proves that for the true collector originality is always more desirable.”

In all, 66 of the 104 cars offered on the day found new owners as did 17 of the 26 motorbikes and four of the six tractors to give a total sale figure of £900,000.
